So Super Baked Carrot French Fries

You know what's better than French fries? Putting carrots in a French fry outfit and tricking yourself into thinking that you're eating French fries.

I learned about this awesome little recipe from Geri's blog, and it looked easy enough. I'm still at a "3-5 ingredients, 3-5 steps" level of recipe proficiency. Watch, one day I'll be slow roasting whole pork shoulders and pickling my own kimchee! But baby steps, people. Anyway, my roomie Louise and I tried baking some carrots other night!

I've decided that musical selection is very important for cooking. For my Boursin chicken, I was cooking to Prince; these carrots were made to Lex Luger instrumentals.

Tyga "Lap Dance"! UHHHHHH!

SO SUPER BAKED CARROT FRENCH FRIES

Ingredients:
2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
Sea salt
6-8 Carrots

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Then...Ree-ree-ree! Sharpen your knife like so.Cut the carrots thinly into 2" sections.
Toss the carrot slices in a bowl with the extra virgin olive oil and salt.
The recipe says to lay the carrots out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. I will do that next time, but this time we improvised with a pizza stone baking thingy thing lined with aluminum foil. I KNOW ITS GHETTO, SHUT UP.
Bake for 18-22 minutes, and then pull those suckers out and season with more salt. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce or don't. I like my fries plain!

Is now open for lunch on the weekdayyyssss! I SAID HELL YEAH. HELL YEAH. And it's not all shitshow-ish during the day like it is for dinner. Their fried chicken sandwich is to die for. Not to mention their lobster rolls and shrimp toast. Plus any place where you get to drink water out of mason jars gets automatic cool points.

Another tip: Son of a Gun stays open super late on the weekends, which makes it a good gourmet alternative to your typical tacos, dirty dogs, diners.

So Super Boursin, Pancetta, and Mushroom Stuffed Chicken

One of my new year's resolutions is to stop playing around and learn how to cook ONCE AND FOR ALL. What that means is that if I'm going to learn how to cook, you're all coming with me. I'm going to document this culinary journey whether you like it or not. I'm making my friends cook with me, and I'm forcing people to eat what I make. Are we clear? Good, let's continue. :)

I've been prowling around the internet looking for recipes...some of my favorite fashion haunts like Because I'm Addicted and Milk and Mode have strong culinary content, and I've made some new discoveries like So Delushious (Okay how cute is Chrissy Teigen, I mean really.)

Since I'm always either in the middle of breaking one diet or about to start a new one, I've been looking at low-carb recipes, and I found a good recipe for stuffed chicken on the aforementioned So Delushious blog of Chrissy Teigen. I modified it a bit, replacing the bacon strips with pancetta and diced mushrooms. Also this recipe yields 4 servings instead of 2. So Super Boursin, Pancetta, and Mushroom Stuffed Chicken

Ingredients:
4 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts
2 pkg. Boursin cheese
1 pkg. Pancetta
8 slices prosciutto
10-12 crimini mushrooms
1 lemon, juiced
Salt and pepper
2 cups chicken stock
10-12 cherry tomatoes
1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil

Other stuff needed:
1 Deep pan
Metal spatula or meat tenderizer
Saran wrap

So. First, pour yourself a glass a wine, because we're about to cook and we need to get through this.

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Now lightly oil the bottom of a deep pan. Okay. Onto the chicken. Rinse the chicken breasts, then place one piece of the chicken breast on top of a piece of Saran wrap. Cover it with another piece of Saran wrap and pound it lightly with the back of a metal spatula to make it super thin and flat. Repeat with the remaining chicken breasts. Once that's done, spread the Boursin cheese generously onto the chicken breasts. Sprinkle pancetta and mushrooms over the Boursin cheese.
Now, roll from the short side in. Wrap two pieces of prosciutto around each chicken roll, making sure not to overlap too much. Place into lightly greased pan. Season with lemon, salt and pepper. Check out my sous chef in action! Lemoning (yes I've decided this is a verb) the chicken rolls! From my experience cooking (all 5 minutes of it), I've found that it's helpful to have a capable sous chef. It also helps if he/she is really cute.
Okay good! Almost there! Pour the chicken stock into the bottom of the pan and drop in your cherry tomatoes. Place the pan on the middle rack and bake for 55 minutes.
Spoon the stock over the chicken every 10-15 minutes.
And 55 minutes later, boom. Check these bad boys out!
The chicken, while low in carbs, is pretty hearty, so I think it's best served with veggies. I made a spinach/arugula salad to go with it.
We did it! The chicken tasted good and we're all still alive! Yayyyy more adventures to come soon.

2. Muji planner & pen - I'm an old-fashioned girl, I love handwriting my appointments and to-do's. Muji pens are the shit.
3. Steven Alan make up bag - Some essentials inside are Aveda tinted moisturizer, Carmex lip balm, Nars Orgasm blush, Clinique creamy eyeliner pencils, Shu Uemura eyelash curler, and some sort of flavor of the week lipstick. I rotate frequently between Nars Heatwave, and Nars Honolulu Honey.
4. Karen Walker sunglasses - These augment any outfit. They also hide your face during hangover brunches. Very important.
5. Comme des Garcons wallet - slim, compact, the best. Because do you really need ALL of your gift cards, pennies, and pearl tea punch cards with you at all times?
6. Jo Malone cologne - My favorite scent is Nectarine Blossom. Smells super light and clean. Boys love it too, hehe.
7. Apple iPhone - DUH. It's usually not in my bag, but rather STUCK TO MY HAND.
8. Zico - Instant refreshment. It's my favorite brand of coconut water. Not gonna lie, I think it's because of the branding/packaging.

That particular night was the opening reception of "Eve" a curation of art done by revolutionary female artists, each celebrating femininity through their respective genres. Always down for a girl power occasion, I was honored and thrilled to play. The exhibit runs from now until August 20th, do find time to stop by and check out the space and the showing.

Last Friday I had a chance to DJ for my pal, Donald Glover. When the folks at House of Blues first added me to the bill, the website said "DJ SUPERSHAM" which had me laughing for a good 30 minutes straight. They eventually changed it, but I wish I had taken a screen shot of the original spelling.

I opened up for his sold out show at House of Blues San Diego during Comic Con weekend. I've been lucky enough to have seen numerous Childish Gambino shows, but this particular crowd and this particular night's energy was by far the best.

Let me start off by saying this was one of the funnest days of 2011! Jen & Hana of Tiger Tiger agreed to help me out with my DJ promo photos, so we started really laying down the plans in March. After a couple of weeks of coordinating, we met up on a gorgeous April morning in Echo Park and went straight. to. WERK. From the original inspiration board, we came out with 7 or 8 final looks. Boyz II Men 2 was the first CD I ever bought as a kid, but I was too young to ever see them in concert during their hey-day. That night though, I was like HEYYYYYY. First of all, they were in full 90's garb: matching navy cable knit Polo sweater vests anyone? Then they performed ALL of the classic jams with original choreography. Believe me I was crying during "On Bended Knee". Crying because it brought me back to the innocence of childhood, crying because no one makes music like that anymore. Bring back the vocal ability, and the emotion, and the matching outfits. Bring it baaaack.

Back in April, I did an insanely fun photoshoot with Jen & Hana of TigerTiger Photography. I rounded up my insanely gifted girlfriends together for what ended up being one of the funnest dress up parties in recent history. Last week, I DJ'ed at Commissary, my go-to coffee joint when I'm mid-city. During my 7p-10p set, they served treats like Cool Haus mint chip ice cream topped with a shot of espresso, as well as pork sliders from the Flat Iron Truck. The coffee kept flowing, and I was bouncing off the walls by the end of the evening.

If you're in the Fairfax/Melrose area, definitely stop by. They brew amazing coffee brands like Coava, Victrola, and Sightglass. My favorite drink there is the iced Cubano. Hopefully we'll be doing more DJ evenings soooooon. If you follow me on Twitter or sign up for my email list, you'll be the first to know!

"J'ai deux amours" - Madeleine Peyroux (An Education soundtrack)

The main objective whilst in Paris was to experience Le Chateaubriand, Inaki Aizpitarte's gastronomic eatery that is so highly applauded by foodies and chefs all around the world. Prior to our departure, we set our alarm clocks for 6am every morning in an attempt to call the reservationist as soon as the restaurant opened. What we got as a result was a long voicemail message on the other end of the line saying that Le Chateaubriand would be closed for renovation for the entire week that we'd be there. ...WHAT?!?!?!?!

Enter Le Dauphin. Le Dauphin is Aizpitarte's sister restaurant next door to Le Chateaubriand. While men hammered away at the construction zone that was Le Chateaubriand, we noshed on a light and delicious prix-fixe lunch next door at the modern minimally decorated Le Dauphin. Very delicious, but hopefully next time we'll be able to try Le Chateaubriand.

Creativity Heals Japan

Video from a benefit I DJ'ed with Mark Marcelo and Bamski. "Creativity Heals Japan" took place on April 30th in Downtown LA and was produced by the beautiful Jenny Kita and Charlene Dere Meyer. Their efforts raised over $6,000 for tsunami relief in Japan. Nihon dai suki!

Le Comptoir

Le Comptoir. Also known as thebestmeali'veeatenin2011sofar. Situated on the left bank in the 6th arrondissement, we heard about this spot from Anthony Bourdain's 100th episode of "No Reservations." Also heavily written about in GQ, NY Times, blahblahblah.

Expecting to either wait for hours or grab a sandwich at its deli next door, we were surprised to be seated within 15 minutes! Score.

Every restaurant with a pig logo is a winner.

Scallops in butter sauce, with caviar and toasted onion.

Escargot.

Plump lobster ravioli.

My favorite: penne pasta with braised pork and foie gras.

Coffee Creme Brulee.

Eating in Paris was a challenge that we prepared for as much as we could. The 2 main obstacles when eating in Paris are 1) the chalkboard menus in tiny handwritten French, and 2) reservations. To overcome the language barrier, we memorized a long list of French foodie vocab, everything from paillard to veau. The reservations on the other hand, were quite another feat. We had a lofty list of dining destinations, and less than 2 weeks to go. If we were getting in anywhere, it wouldn't be through reservations; it would be through luck and persistence.

The back up strategy: Try to dine at the tail end of lunch or early dinner. And? It worked! We got into most of the restaurants we aimed for, except for Le Chateaubriand which was closed for renovations.

Hang on. More Paris food coming.

Hotel Amour

Yay! Finally a chance to post some photos from Paris. We stayed at Hotel Amour, graffiti artist Andre's painfully hip boutique hotel in the 9th arrondissement. Think Terry Richardson photography in the hallways, The Strokes' new album blasting through the lobby, Justice having dinner in the restaurant, served by uber good looking hipsters. Ground zero for the Parisian style set.

There are about 20 or so rooms, all different themed. Not sure what the theme of our room was, maybe a "no shower only French bathtub" theme? Because we sure as hell did not have a shower stall. Bubble baths all week? Fine by me.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi

Today I attended a private screening of "Jiro Dreams of Sushi," a gorgeous documentary about sushi culture through the eyes of Jiro Ono. Awarded a solid 3-Michelin star rating, many agree that his restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro is the best sushi in the world.

Congrats to David Gelb on a beautiful film, and thank you to my friend Michal for the invitation to the screening! I was inspired and was salivating over the luscious sushi from start to finish. I hope one day to experience Sukiyabashi Jiro for myself! This is is a must-see documentary for any sushi lover, food lover, and anyone passionate about their craft.

I often photograph new restaurants that I try, but I'm also trying to capture stills of my all-time favorite foods.

I've tried the rest, and while some come close (shout out to Lazy Ox, Bowery, In & Out!), Father's Office is still my favorite burger in Los Angeles. The greens, the cheese, the absence of tomatoes (I loathe them), the aioli, the bun...all sum up to delicious perfection.

This past week, a stylist came into my office to pull clothing for a photoshoot, and left pulling at my heart strings. Laura Leavitt is a stylist with a super cute online boutique called Sleepwalker LA, which features a regularly updated stock of boho, vintage navajo prints, and a whole lotta lace. The best part? Sang Yoon, the creator of Father's Office (one of my top 5 burger picks in Los Angeles), finally opened up his new eatery, Lukshon. Just a few doors down from Father's Office at Helm's Bakery, Lukshon is Yoon's modern Asian cuisine concept. Jo, Dennis, and I snagged a Friday night reservation in it's opening week, and we were met with some hits and some misses. Here's what went down:

First of all, I wasn't too thrilled to be greeted with a 30 minute wait when we clearly had reservations. However the cocktail menu and the outdoor fire pit did somewhat make up for the wait.

The napkins sort of look like a Louis Vuitton scarf, no?
Tea seems to be the specialty beverage on the menu. Will have to go back and order from the tea section.
The Foie Gras Ganache. While I usually dig foie gras ANYTHING, I did not enjoy this one. I felt like there wasn't enough of a complementary ingredient (usually something sweet) to balance out the foie gras, literally a lump of liver.
Spicy Chicken Pops. These babies were incredible. Almost unbearably spicy, but so good! but so spicy! but so good! but so spicy! but so...
Baby Monterey Squid. Also solid, but not brag-worthy.
X.O. Rice. This rice was highly recommended by the staff, and is prepared with a house-made x.o. sauce.
Chiang Mai Curry Noodles. I would skip this, and get the Dan Dan Noodles next time.
Garlic Pork Belly + Rice Cakes. This was delicious and fatty and great with the rice cakes!
Courtesy of the chef, they brought us a dessert trio!
My first experience at Lukshon was OK. We may have misfired with our ordering. I definitely would go back for the spicy chicken pops, and I still want to try the dandan noodles and the heirloom black rice.

So...really kind of obsessed with this site, Of a Kind.

Of a Kind is a special kind of retail site where each week, they feature a designer through a series of interviews, exclusive photo coverage, and inspiration stories. And in addition, the designer releases a limited-edition piece designed exclusively for Of a Kind.

The site really caught my attention with its clean design, great photography, and amazing product. There's real sense of thoughtfulness to each post, both by the editors and the designers involved. And as a reader/consumer I always love the chance to own a specially made piece by my favorite designer.

Unfortunately I found out about Of A Kind just a tad too late to pick up one of these beautiful Clare Vivier pouches (she is one of my fave new designers), but I'm really looking forward to all of the upcoming features!

We finally got around to trying The Bazaar, Jose Andres' molecular gastronomy food carnival on La Cienega. In the two years that it has been open, I've heard and read so many things about this place. And two years later, Bazaar lived up to its expectations...the ambience, the service, and the food were all incredible! These were my favorite plates from our meal:

Boneless chicken wings with olive puree.

And the highlight of my night was the foie gras cotton candy!

Coffee table. I love candles, and this Voluspa Santiago Huckleberry candle is one of my favorites.

Lovemade Clothing Drive

This Saturday, Lovemade invites you to join them for their first annual Thanksgiving Clothes Drive, donating new and old threads to the LA Youth Network.

Moxsie Style Off

Moxsie, always the innovator, approached me with their latest idea for a contest. They assigned one of their dresses to 3 different bloggers and we were each asked to style the dress in our own way. What we have here people is a STYLE OFF!

The lace material and burgundy color of the dress screamed 90's grunge to me, so I styled it with some rugged boots, and a denim vest. My model has a lazy side braid topped with a slouchy beanie. Her bucket bag is full of chiclets, cigarettes, and CD's. She may look chipper, but she is really angry, emaciated, and doesn't give a ****.

Robata Jinya

Growing up in LA, the central hubs for good Japanese cuisine have always been found in Little Tokyo, Olympic & Sawtelle, the South Bay, and nowhere in between. On one perfect windy night this week, Dennis and I finally had a chance to try Robata Jinya. Curiously placed on 3rd and Fairfax, I found it hard to believe that there actually might be a legit ramen house in Mid-City. But knowing that Robata Jinya was a stem off of beloved Jinya Ramen, my dubiousness melted into excitement as we nestled into bar stools at the counter.
In addition to ramen, Robata Jinya also has a solid izakaya and sushi menu. We tried a few different skewers, but the real stand out was the Tanuki: shiitake mushrooms stuffed with grilled chicken.
And onto the ramen. The menu is simple, as it should be. There are about 5 options, including a Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen which peaked my interest because they only offer 20 servings per day. We didn't make it in time to try this ramen, but I am strategizing an imminent conquest so stay tuned for that. What I did try was the Kyoto Spicy Ramen, which was very flavorful but, sadly, not spicy enough. D had the Yokohama Tonkotsu Ramen, and his order won me over with its buttery and savory broth. Both bowls had good cuts of pork, and the noodles were prepared perfectly.

Also! When you go to Robata, order the house hot sake. For only $10, they give you a very generously sized bottle to keep you and your companion's glasses full throughout the entire meal. And they bring out a selection of sake glasses in a variety of shapes and colors and let you choose your own. Cute points for that.

My favorite accessory lately is the Teknine 18karat gold earbuds from Munitio. Not only have they mastered sound delivery, it is evident that they had the user in mind during the design process: from the packaging, the range of sizes for every ear, to the soft protective carrying pouch. Over the weekend I had the opportunity to play at the opening of Dipped, an uber hip boutique nail salon in Redondo Beach. Turns out that many of us involved are natives of the Westside/South Bay, and just like true Westside/South Bay weather, the event was sunny and cooooool. The Lomo Arigato truck, another South Bay native, was parked out front, and I had a chance to dip my fork into their delicious noodles. I'm already planning my return to get my nails done did, I foresee a Fall-inspired nail art situation happening. When you catch yourself cruising down PCH, stop into Dipped, and follow them on twitter too while you're at it.

6(1) My boyfriend at one of our many coffee shop stops. Stumptown, Victrola, BauHaus, Caffe Vita, and Cafe Presse all deserve a visit.
(2) I made a new beer discovery while at Quinn's for happy hour! Echt Kriekenbier is just as lusciously sweet as Lindeman's Framboise.
(3-4) Quinn's has an incredible happy hour. We ordered a couple of rounds of beers and 3 small plates for about $25.
(5) Anchovies+Olives might have been the best dinner I've had all year. Quaint room dimly lit, save for the bright open kitchen that had this zen-like quiet hum. My favorite was the bigoli pasta. "Oyster Power Hour" is from 10p to close, $1 per oyster and $5 glasses of Reisling. Full meal including 20 plump Kumamoto oysters, alcohol, dessert, and exceptionally attentive service = $80. I shit you not. You cannot find this full-bodied experience or value in LA.
(6) Unicorn Bar is the new dive in hipsterville Capitol Hill, and also where I tried Unicorn Jizz for the first time. And believe me I am going back for seconds.

There are some things about Seattle that you must know before you go there.

1. The Ace Hotel in Seattle is not like the other locations. It's more of a 5-star hostel, than a budget hotel, if that makes any sense to you. We had one of the only rooms with a private bathroom. And there's only 1 employee working at any given time. Kind of like that I Love Lucy episode when they're driving across America and they stop in at a small town where the restaurant owner is also the mayor and the sheriff and the town doctor.
2. Salumi's hours of operation are Tuesday - Friday from 11am - 4pm. So plan your trip accordingly, because you must stop into this Italian sandwich shop owned by Papa Batali, Mario's dad. Our flight touched down on Friday afternoon so you know we trucked it over, luggage in tow, just before it closed. Unfortunately the more popular sandwiches were sold out, but you will never hear me complaining about any Italian deli meats. Our sandwiches were still incredible.
3. Totokaelo is as cute as it's online shop. Really well edited boutique, reminds me of Creatures of Comfort. I had my eye on a Mociun ring, and a pair of Opening Ceremony suede pumps.
4. Matt is in the Market. AHHHHHHH the seafood is off the chain in Seattle. Plump, healthy scallops, meaty prawns, it is straight seafood on steroids, which is how good seafood is supposed to be. The first night we had reservations at Matt's in the Market. Below is the prawn ceviche, and below below is my scallop dish that was to die for.

Another thing about Seattle: really keep in mind that everything closes early (6 or 7p) even on Fridays and Saturdays. I sprinted to half of these places trying to get there before it closed. Food wise this is rather important because the food is so fresh that they will run out and you'll be left with slim-pickins.

Hearty Magazine & DJ Lady Sha put together a delightful audio file in which Mayer Hawthorne cruises down memory lane, recalling many of his "firsts."

Mayer's interview peaked my interest, the adorable cover art drew me in, and in no time I was thinking of the ghetto ass mixtape cassettes I made using songs I'd record straight off the radio.

Still in major shock from last night. Donald Glover did an impromptu and very intimate show, wherein he freestyled and rapped entire songs off his album over classic Dilla and Primo beats. Call it a live remix, and those who were able to come out know how magical it was to experience it within the historic walls of a hip hop mecca like Fat Beats LA. RIP Fat Beats. Thank you Donald for letting me share in the experience!

Last time I stopped into the Mohawk General Store, they had just received a large shipment of Comme Des Garcons wallets in all shapes and sizes. They merchandised the goods to play up the different colors and textures, and I couldn't help but snap a photo or two. The table looked like a bunch of shiny, neatly arranged Chiclets. If you haven't stopped by their new space on Sunset, please do! It's twice as big as the original spot, and even more charming.
